Hillary Clinton, as Secretary of State, was one of just 21 cabinet and senior staff members who were explicitly authorized to classify documents as “Top Secret” and “Secret” by a December 29, 2009 Executive Order Signed by Obama. (See Executive Order 13526,
She was trained to recognize materials in those categories and claims that she certainly knew what classified material looked like.
So why didn’t she classify an email forwarded to her by Huma Abedin on April 10, 2011 re: “Stevens Update (important)’?
The email discussed the location and possible time table for departure from Libya, information from both AFRICOM,the Department of Defense headquarters in Africa, and British officials.
Didn’t this send a big red flag up to the Secretary who was so familiar with the criteria for classification.
Here’s some excerpts from the email, which originated from Timmy T.Davis, the head of the State Department Political Section in Libya at the time:
STEVENS CONSIDERING LEAVING BENGHAZI
The situation in Ajdablyah has worsened to the point where Stevens is considering leaving Benghazi. The envoy’s delegation us currently doing a phased checkout, paying hotel bills, moving Rooms to the boat, etc. He will monitor the situation to see if it deteriorates further, but no decision has been made on departure. He will wait 2-3 hours, then revisit the decision on departure.
BRITISH REPORTS
The Brits report Qadafi forces are moving from Skirte to Brega…
POLITICAL FALLOUT OF LEAVING
If the group departs, the contract for the boar stipulates they return to Greece. One scenario could be the group stages elsewhere for a few days.
Departure would send a significant political signal, and would be interpreted as the U.S. losing confidence in the TNC. Initial message to the TNC would frame the departure as due to security concerns and a temporary measure only.’’
SO WHY DIDN’T HILLARY GET IT?
